The story on the gig is that itâs just a shorty, a fill-in stint for the weekend at the Resort Red Apple, a sometime family but mostly convention site housed in a huge rambling frame building with a couple of loads of road gravel raked across the front. There is a convention of sports-coated tire salesmen with their wives alongâthe men listening to each other talk all morning and then dressing themselves up in crazy pants to play golf in the afternoon sun, while their wives, dressed in simple silky dresses and high-heeled pumps, go first to a luncheon fashion show and then spend the rest of the afternoon slipping their legs one way and then slipping their legs the other way while sitting on folding chairs hearing about flower arranging in a corner of the lobby.
Also at the Red Apple are a couple of big family reunions, some honeymooners, and even itâs the once-a-year weekend for a gathering of enthusiasts for a Psychic Faire that sets up on card tables in the low-rent space down in the basement with its chipped checkerboard-tiled flooring, an adjacent hot-breathing laundry room, and a nice variety of vending machines.
At night in the enormous dining room, C.W.âs band plays big-band dance music underneath a slowly turning mirrored mosaic ball that showers the dancers and band over with a fine sprinkling of tiny lights, and during the afternoon, C.W. slugs it out with the boys in rehearsal.
The women get bored.
They lie coiled in deck chairs out by the pool looking for something to happen. They rub cocoa-butter squares over their lips and shake up bottles of baby oil and iodine just to see how long it takes them to separate again into a layer of oil and a layer of iodine. They look in on Eugene from time to time, knocking on his door, and once inside they talk about C.W., about how they need him to take them on some horses or up in the gondola. They follow the signs to the Psychic Faire and they spend time down there, down in the basement, slapping down the cool tile steps in their rubber pool sandals to wander around in the smoggy incense haze, their fists jammed deep in their pockets holding quarters for the vending machines.
